To make the footnote margin wider, simply select the footnote text by highlighting all of it with the cursor. Leave it selected, and then move your mouse up to the ruler bar ? the thin bar with numbers on it just underneath the Ribbon menu at the top.

Changing the Way Footnotes Are Numbered Make sure the References tab is selected on the ribbon. Click the small downward-pointing arrow at the lower-right corner of the Footnotes group.Make sure the Footnotes radio button is selected. Change the Start At value to reflect where you want Word to start numbering.

If you are doing your edits without Track Changes being turned on, then it is possible that your footnotes don't use automatic numbering. Meaning, whoever created the footnotes actually inserted the numbers within the Custom Mark field of the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.

To Modify the footnote Style; Right mouse click the Footnote Text style ? Choose Update Footnote Text to Match Selection from the list. The style will change and become the default but only in this document. Any existing and new footnotes will have this style as well.

If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.

Once the footnote text is selected, press F9. A dialogue box will open saying ?Word cannot undo this action. Do you want to continue?? Select yes, and your cross-references will be updated! You can also update a single cross-reference by selecting it and pressing F9.

On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Format, on the Number format pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply. Tips: You can change the size or font of the note reference mark, footnote, or endnote exactly as you would any other text.
