A digitally-signed catalog file (. cat) can be used as a digital signature for an arbitrary collection of files. A catalog file contains a collection of cryptographic hashes, or thumbprints. Each thumbprint corresponds to a file that is included in the collection.

On the File menu, click Select Windows Image. In the Select a Windows Image dialog box, select the file type in the Files of type drop-down list, and then browse to a Windows image file or catalog file. If you open a Windows image file, Windows SIM will automatically create a catalog of that Windows image.

A catalog file is a binary file that only includes the settings and packages in a Windows image. Catalog files (. clg) are only used by Windows SIM and is not used by other deployment tools, nor is it required to Windows.

To create a catalog file, you must first manually create a Catalog Definition File (. cdf) that describes the catalog header attributes and file entries. Once this file is created, you can then run the MakeCat tool to create a catalog file.

Security catalog is part of Windows that handles digital signatures for updates, system file protection and other stuff. It resides in two folders: C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot. C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot2.

The security catalog contains the cryptographic hashes of all files included in the troubleshooting pack. When you run a troubleshooting pack, WTP gets the security catalog from the pack's folder and confirms that the files in the folder match those specified in the security catalog.

If you cannot open your CATALOG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CATALOG file directly in the browser: Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
