On the desktop, open Google Drive and sign into your account. Click the Settings menu (gear icon) in the top left corner, select Settings. Under Offline, check the box under Create, open and edit your recent Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on this device while offline.

Now, once installed and you have made the files available offline, it does not matter if you are connected to the internet, logout from google in the web or whatever the case is, you are able to work and edit the files as you please and the changes will be saved once the system is connected to the internet.

If you use an older computer or browser, it might not meet the system requirements for Docs, Slides or Sheets. You can also try to open the same file in another device. If you can open the same document on a different computer, the issue may be specific to your device.
