The full retirement age is 66 if you were born from 1943 to 1954. The full retirement age increases gradually if you were born from 1955 to 1960, until it reaches 67. For anyone born 1960 or later, full retirement benefits are payable at age 67.

For the year 2022, the maximum income you can earn after retirement is $19,560 ($1,630 per month), without having your benefits reduced. The amount goes up each year. The maximum income limit doesn't change depending on your age; in other words, it's the same whether you're 62, 63, or 64.

However, you unfortunately cannot begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits at 55. The earliest age you can begin drawing Social Security retirement benefits is 62. But there's a catch. Taking Social Security benefits prior to reaching your normal retirement age results in a reduction of your benefit amount.

The maximum benefit depends on the age you retire. For example, if you retire at full retirement age in 2022, your maximum benefit would be $3,345. However, if you retire at age 62 in 2022, your maximum benefit would be $2,364. If you retire at age 70 in 2022, your maximum benefit would be $4,194.

You can start your retirement benefit at any point from age 62 up until age 70. Your benefit will be higher the longer you delay starting it.

If you will reach full retirement age in 2022, the limit on your earnings for the months before full retirement age is $51,960. Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, there is no limit on how much you can earn and still receive your benefits.
