Insert a section break Select where you want a new section to begin. Go to Layout > Breaks, and then choose the type of section break you want. Next Page Starts the new section on the following page. Continuous Starts the new section on the same page.

This action (pressing Enter) indicates that you have reached the end of the paragraph and want to start a new one. The other way to end a line is to press Shift+Enter; this results in a soft return, sometimes called a line break or a newline character, being entered in the document.

Inserting a Line Break Using a Keyboard Shortcut Double-click on the cell in which you want to insert the line break (or press F2). This will get you into the edit mode in the cell. Place the cursor where you want the line break. Use the keyboard shortcut ? ALT + ENTER (hold the ALT key and then press Enter).

A paragraph break (hit Enter or Return on the keyboard) is always more meaningful than a line break (hit Shift + Enter or Return on the keyboard).

Where is the Break key on the keyboard? On most keyboards, the Break key is on the right side of the top row of keys. On a typical U.S. keyboard, it is the alternate function of the Pause key. If so, pressing Ctrl + Pause may be required to activate Break.
