If it is the first word in a sentence, capitalize it, i.e., Eq. (3). It is also pretty normal to refer to an equation in the text with only its number within parentheses, like ?(3)?. In this case, if it is the first word in the sentence, spell out ?Equation? before the number, like ?Equation (3)?.

If you need to use an equation, add or write it in Word. Select Insert > Equation or press Alt + =. To use a built-in formula, select Design > Equation. To create your own, select Design > Equation > Ink Equation. Use your finger, stylus, or mouse to write your equation.

Add captions Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation.

To reference a LaTeX table or equation in LaTeX you need to make sure that you insert a label in your table or equation and that such label has a tab: prefix for tables and a eqn: prefix for equations. Notice the \label{tab:somelabel} inside the \caption . Notice the \label{eqn:somelabel}.

If you include tables, figures, and equations in your documents, they should be properly numbered and cross-referenced. By convention, table captions are above the table; figure captions are below the figure, and equation numbers are to the right of the equation.

Generally speaking, the equation captions are required to be right aligned and on the same line with the equation, and the caption numbers should be enclosed in parentheses as below screenshots shown.

Insert your equation into the center column. Insert your cursor into a space following the table and hit Return. Use the References tab to insert a new caption with the label of Equation.
