Bills of exchange, bank drafts, postal orders, and cheques are examples of non-legal tender money. These types of money are usually accepted but legally there is no obligation to accept them.

American paper currency comes in seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The United States no longer issues bills in larger denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills. But they are still legal tender and may still be in circulation.

In 1933, Congress changed the law so that all U.S. coins and currency (including Federal Reserve notes), regardless of when issued, constitutes "legal tender" for all purposes.

Under 18 U.S. § 486, it's a criminal offense to make or pass any metal coins "intended for use as current money, whether in the resemblance of coins of the United States or of foreign countries, or of original design." An offense is punishable with up to 5 years in prison, a fine, or both.

If you are convicted of damaging U.S. bills or coins, you may face fines, jail time, or both. For bills, the maximum fine is $100 and the maximum jail sentence is six months. For coins, the prison sentence can be up to five years.

Legal Tender refers to all U.S. coins and currency that issued by the government. U.S. Cash dollars are also a valid form of legal tender. Nonetheless, federal statutes do not require a seller to accept cash as a form of legal tender for payment of goods or services that were rendered.

As legal tender, the dollar is accepted for both public and private debts. The dollar's value fluctuates with economic conditions and the federal government's management of interest rates.

Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States.

Today, Californians most often transfer title to real property by a simple written instrument, the grant deed. The word ?grant? is expressly designated by statute as a word of conveyance. (Civil Code Section 1092) A second form of deed is the quitclaim deed.

Where to Find the Deed. In California, property deeds are in the County Recorders Office or Office of the Assessor-Recorder in the county in which the property is located. In some counties, if you request an older record, you may be redirected to yet another department that maintains archived records.
