Building Department A permit is required to build, renovate, install, or replace any addition, garage or concrete flatwork.

Locating permit documents and records Records from 2004 and older are not available online and a request should be submitted by email to DS-recordsresearch@hillsboroughcounty.org. The following should be included in the email request: Year property was built, address, any previous addresses, and folio number.

Note: Ohio law requires that we review your permit application within 30 days from when we receive it.

Normally it is the local city Building Department in the municipality in Ohio where the property or project is found that will process your application and issue the permit. However in rural areas it is often the county Building Department that handles all permitting.

A building permit is not required for a detached accessory structure as long as the structure does not exceed twelve feet (12') in ANY dimension. This means if the building is only 10 feet wide by 12 feet long by 11 feet tall, a building permit will not be required (A zoning permit may still be required).
