Creating a table of contents in a Microsoft Word document is a two-step process. First, identify the text that you want to appear in the Table of Contents. Second, tell Word to insert the Table of Contents. Having created your Table of Contents, you can then customize it in several ways, to suit your needs.

Insert your cursor where you want the Table of Contents to go. On the Ribbon, go to the References. Under the Table of Contents group on the left, click the Table of Contents button. You can choose to insert a default option, or click on Custom Table of Contents? at the bottom of the menu.

Do not use a heading to introduce a table, figure, or list. You must have text below a heading that introduces and explains the figure or table.

In the Paragraph group on the Home tab. On the References tab, in the Table of Authorities group, click Insert Table of Authorities. In the Category box, click the category that you want to include in your table of authorities. To include all categories, click All.

Once you've applied heading styles, you can insert your table of contents in just a few clicks. Navigate to the References tab on the Ribbon, then click the Table of Contents command. Select a built-in table from the menu that appears, and the table of contents will appear in your document.

On the toolbar ribbon, select References. Near the left end, select Insert Table of Contents. (Or select Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents. The table of contents is inserted, showing the headings and page numbering in your document.

A table of contents, usually headed simply Contents and abbreviated informally as TOC, is a list, usually found on a page before the start of a written work, of its chapter or section titles or brief descriptions with their commencing page numbers.
