The rule of 55 is an IRS policy that allows workers to take early withdrawals from their employer-sponsored retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s, at age 55 or older without paying a 10% penalty provided that they leave their jobs. The Secure Act made major changes to the RMD rules. If you reached the age of 70½ in 2019 the prior rule applies, and you must take your first RMD by April 1, 2020. If you reach age 70 ½ in 2020 or later you must take your first RMD by April 1 of the year after you reach 72.

For example, at each 72 the life expectancy factor is 27.3. The percentage of the account that must be distributed as an RMD is 3.66%. At age 75 the life expectancy factor is 24.6, and the RMD amounts to 4.07% of the IRA. At age 80, 4.95% of the IRA must be distributed as an RMD.
