However, do file an amended return if there's a change in your filing status, income, deductions, credits or tax liability.

If there's a mistake and the IRS sent you a notice or returned the form. If information is missing, the IRS will either return the form or send you a notice asking for specific information it needs to finish processing your tax return.

Among this year's corrections, 7.4 million returns were passed on to what the IRS calls the ?Error Resolution System,? meaning they have to be reviewed further for mistakes or omissions. That's where the delays really kick in. The good news is, the IRS will tell you if a math error is holding up your return.

As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud.
