Excise taxes apply to specific goods or services, particularly those deemed harmful to society, such as alcohol, tobacco, and fuels. Sales tax is typically applied to all individual transactions, regardless of the goods sold, meaning it applies to many different types of goods.

Excise taxes are commonly levied on cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, soda, gasoline, insurance premiums, amusement activities, and betting, and typically make up a relatively small and volatile portion of state and local and, to a lesser extent, federal tax collections.

An excise or excise tax (sometimes called an excise duty) is a type of tax charged on goods produced within the country (as opposed to customs duties, charged on goods from outside the country). It is a tax on the production or sale of a good. This tax is now known as the Central Value Added Tax (CENVAT).

Common excise taxes include those on gasoline, tobacco and plane tickets. Excise taxes may be charged either as a percentage of the purchase price or as a fixed dollar amount. It makes sense to compare excise taxes to sales taxes, but excise taxes are usually narrower in scope.

Real estate excise tax (REET) is a tax on the sale of real property. All sales of real property in the state are subject to REET unless a specific exemption is claimed. The seller of the property typically pays the real estate excise tax, although the buyer is liable for the tax if it is not paid.
