Watermarks are often used commercially to identify the manufacturer or the grade of paper. They have also been used to detect and prevent counterfeiting and forgery. The notion of watermarks as a means of identification was carried beyond the printing press into the computer age.

What is a watermark and how does it work? The idea behind watermarking is simple. By including a semi-transparent line of text, symbol or logo into an image, you make it clear that the rights to it belong to a specific photographer or company, and that it cannot simply be used without authorization.

A watermark is made by impressing a water-coated metal stamp or dandy roll onto the paper during manufacturing. These watermarks were first introduced in Bologna, Italy, in 1282; however the dandy roll was invented in 1826 by John Marshall.

Use predefined watermarks when printing Select the printer, and then click the Properties, Printer Properties, or Preferences. Click the Effects tab. In the Watermarks drop-down list, select a watermark. Select the First page only check box to print the watermark on the first page only.

This mark becomes apparent when the paper is held up to light and is visible from the front or back of the document. A true watermark is difficult to reproduce. It cannot be be duplicated on either a scanner or a copier.

The watermark can be also removed at Client > Edit > e-File Options by clearing the option e-File 94x. Be sure to Save your changes, and then recreate the form. Clearing this option disables e-filing any 94x return for the selected client.

The earliest English watermarks date to circa 1494. In the 1790s, English papermakers and mouldmakers who sympathized with loyalists during the French Revolution produced counterfeit paper with light and dark watermarks with the aim of ruining the currency of the Revolutionary government.
