If you want your footnotes and endnotes to be numbered continuously from the beginning of your document to the end, select the ?Continuous? option. If you'd prefer to have your notes numbered by chapter or section, select the ?Restart Each Section? option. Or select ?Restart Each Page? to number your notes by page.

Using the Notes drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes window, choose Footnote Separator. Word displays the current separator in the window. Change or delete the separator, as desired. When you are satisfied with the appearance of the separator, close the footnote window.

That's due to the formatting of your Footnote Reference style. > Use Format>Style to change it.

The Footnote and EndNote dialog box will be displayed. Towards the bottom of the dialog box, where it says Numbering, click on the dropdown. Options include Continuous, Restart each section or Restart each page.

To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

What I suspect has happened is that someone has opened that file in one of the other applications out there that impersonate Word, such as LibreOffice. That will have converted the footnotes to text, so you will have to re-insert them ALL. Immediately beside each old footnote, insert a new footnote.

Footnotes can also be used to add extra information such as commentary on the source cited, or elaborations on a point you touched on in the main text. In Chicago footnotes, you place a footnote at the end of the clause or sentence that needs a citation.

Changing the Way Footnotes Are Numbered Make sure the References tab is selected on the ribbon. Click the small downward-pointing arrow at the lower-right corner of the Footnotes group.Make sure the Footnotes radio button is selected. Change the Start At value to reflect where you want Word to start numbering.

Here are the steps to take: Place your cursor in the body text where you want the footnote superscript to appear. Select the References tab in the ribbon toolbar. Click Insert Footnote.Type your footnote according to style. Repeat the process for every additional footnote.

You have the option to restart footnote or endnote numbers so that numbering begins with 1 on each page or in each section. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Format, in the Start at box, enter 1. On the Numbering pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply.
