Apply color to alternate rows or columns Select the range of cells that you want to format. Click Home > Format as Table. Pick a table style that has alternate row shading. If you click in the bar next to a record, it highlights the whole record. If you click in a control or column within the record, the whole record is highlighted. If you click in a column, though the whole record is highlighted but the control with focus is a different appearance.
