The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a very large telescope array that uses interferometric techniques to combine data from eight telescope arrays around the globe. The EHT works like one enormous antenna with a radio dish effectively the diameter of the Earth itself.

How do radio interferometers greatly enhance resolution in radio wavelengths? Hooking two or more radio dishes together with a computer lets us get resolution not equal to the diameters of the dishes, but to the separations between the scopes.

Another way to increase the resolution is to connect telescopes together to make an interferometer. Radio waves from an object reach each telescope in the interferometer at slightly different times, so the waves are out of sync with one another.

The longer the distance between two telescopes, the better the resolution when they are used together. Radio astronomers sometimes use telescopes that are thousands of kilometers apart to improve the resolution of their observations. This is called very long baseline interferometry or VLBI.

Interferometry is most widely used in radio astronomy, in which signals from separate radio telescopes are combined. A mathematical signal processing technique called aperture synthesis is used to combine the separate signals to create high-resolution images.

In order to make a clearer, or higher resolution, radio image, radio astronomers often combine several smaller telescopes, or receiving dishes, into an array. Together, these dishes can act as one large telescope whose resolution is set by the maximum size of the area.
