Secondment agreements allow for an employer to assign an employee to another organisation for a specified duration, for purposes of developing good business relationships; enhancing an employee's particular skill set or for sharing the particular expertise of that employee with the host company.

Process description As a lateral movement, a secondment allows an employee to perform the functions of a position that already exists or to take on a special project in another organization. The employee maintains his or her substantive position in the home organization, and is paid by the home organization.

In a transfer, the employment relationship to transferred to the new employer (i.e. the original company is no longer the employer), whereas in a secondment situation, the employee remains under the employment of the original company but may perform work for the secondee company.
