A table of contents (TOC) in MS Word is not a dynamic link, and thus it does not update automatically. You must initiate the action. Right-click in the table of contents, and then a menu will pop up. Select one of two choices: update the page numbers only, or update the entire table of contents.

In the existing table of contents, determine where you want to add an entry. Then, place the text cursor at the end of the entry above where you want the new entry. Press the Enter key to add a new blank line in the table of contents. Type the text for the new entry.

Go to References > Update Table. Select one of the following: Update page numbers only This only updates the pages that the headings are on, and ignores any changes to the heading text. Update entire table This will reflect any updates to the heading text, as well as any page changes.

Click the References tab. In the Table of Contents group, click Table of Contents. Choose the style of Table of Contents you wish to insert. Automatic Table 1 creates a ToC titled Contents.

Click in the table that you want to format. Under Table Tools, click the Design tab. In the Table Styles group, rest the pointer over each table style until you find a style that you want to use. Click the style to apply it to the table.

To perform the update: Click anywhere in the table of contents. Press F9 or the Update Table button in the content control (or on the REFERENCES tab) Use the Update Table of Contents dialog box to choose what to update. Click OK.

Press Ctrl + A on your keyboard to select the whole document. Press F9 on your keyboard. If your document has tables with fields or formulas, you have to highlight each table separately. Then, press F9.
