As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, driving with an expired license is as good an offense as driving without a license. Section 177 of the Act lays down that driving without a license would liable the offender to pay a fine of Rs. 500/- or of imprisonment of a maximum of 3 months or both.

As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, you can apply for the renewal of your driving licence any time from 1 year prior to the expiry of the licence to 1 year after the expiry of the licence.

The grace period for renewal of driving licence in Delhi is 30 days from the date of DL expiry.

Private Driving license is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till the holder attains 40 years of age, which comes earlier. After the age of 40 the Driving licence will be issued for 10 years & then 5 years subsequently.

An application for renewal shall be entertained not more than one month before the date of expiry of the licence. If the application is late for more than five years after the date of expiry of the licence, the applicant should undergo all the formalities to obtain a fresh licence.

The order covers documents whose validity has expired since Feb 2020 or would expire by Oct 2021. The government on Thursday extended the validity of motor vehicle documents like driving licence, registration certificate and permits till October 31, 2021, in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

You must pass two road tests to become fully licensed. Passing the first road test lets you move to Level Two (Class G2), and the second one gives you full Class G driving privileges.

The G2 License is potentially valid for five years after you first get your G1 license. However, there is some renewal steps involved with this process. The government will send you a postcard that reminds you that you need to renew your license. The card should show up between sixty and ninety days of the deadline.
