Footnotes are notes placed at the bottom of the page in a piece of academic writing and indicated in the text with superscript numbers (or sometimes letters or other symbols). You can insert footnotes automatically in Word or Google Docs. They're used to provide: Citations in certain styles.

Basically, footnoted material is of three types: Direct quotations from another author's work. (These must be placed in quotation marks). Citing authority for statements which are not quoted directly. Material of an explanatory nature which does not fit into the flow of the body of the text.
