Tables and figures must all be labelled with numbered captions that clearly identify and describe them. Figure captions are generally placed below the figures, while table captions must be placed above the tables.

Triple-click the name at the top of the table, then type a new name. To enclose the table title in a border, click the table, then in the Format sidebar, click the Table tab.

In the table, right-click in the row that you want to repeat, and then click Table Properties. In the Table Properties dialog box, on the Row tab, select the Repeat as header row at the top of each page check box. Select OK.

A title should first allow the user to understand easily what the table is about. Second, within a table list the reader should easily find the table he/she is looking for and see the differences amongst the tables.

Every figure and table should have a caption. Here are some tips on using captions: A figure caption is centered under the figure; a table caption is centered above the table (if a caption is more than one line, make it left justified). A Figure and its caption should appear on the same page.

Captions should say something enough about the figure or table which can be understood without referring to the main text.

Tables should be: Labeled with the table number and descriptive title above the table. Labeled with column and/or row labels that describe the data, including units of measurement.

Your table title should include details of what your figure is presenting, including the variables, statistics, significance level, and sample size. Lines: Use only essential horizontal lines; remove vertical lines and unessential horizontal lines (easily done in both MS Excel and Word).

While it is not necessary for each table to have a caption, a caption is generally very helpful. If present, it should be associated to the table using the <caption> element.
