More than 40% of people fail their written driving knowledge test the first time they take it. That's almost half! Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful tools out there to help you learn the material before you take the written test.

An applicant can take the written test up to three times without paying another application fee.

Take Knowledge Test You will first be tested on traffic signs followed by general traffic laws around the state of Virginia. All ten questions on traffic signs must be answered correctly before moving on to the next part. 30 questions are present on the second portion and you must answer 80% of them to pass.

If you fail the knowledge test you must wait seven days before taking it again. You may re-take the test as many times as you like, but if you have not passed it after 180 days, you will need to renew your Test Receipt.

Take Your Knowledge Test IF YOU FAIL, you can re-test in 7 days. IF YOU PASS, your permit will be validated, and you can go to the next step.

There is no limit to the number of knowledge tests you can take within the 180-day period, but there is a mandatory waiting period of seven days before you can re-take the knowledge test; however, the test receipt is valid for 180 days and will need to be renewed for $125.00 upon expiration of the test receipt.

There's no limit on the number of times you can fail a driving test. So if you're on your second, fifth, or seventh go it really doesn't matter. Try not to focus on the number of tests failed and look forward to the moment when you pass and get your licence.

Those under 18 will receive a test with 46 questions and must answer 38 of them correctly to pass. If you are over 18, your test will only have 36 questions, and you must answer 30 of them correctly.
