Title jumping is when someone purchases a car and then resells it without having titled it in their own name. Also known as floating a title, the practice is illegal. A title is a record of the vehicle's ownership history kept by the state.

If the buyer doesn't transfer the title within 10 days, the car's registration is suspended.

To protect yourself from liability, you should complete a Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days from the date of sale. You may still submit a vehicle transfer notification after 30 days from the date of sale, but it does not guarantee release from liability.

After the title paperwork has been processed by the Denver Motor Vehicle Division you should receive a Title Complete Notice via U.S. Postal mail service indicating that you can purchase license plates and register your vehicle.
