Use footnotes and endnotes to explain, comment on, or provide references to something in a document. Usually, footnotes appear at the bottom of the page, while endnotes come at the end of the document or section.

Footnotes are notes placed at the bottom of the page in a piece of academic writing and indicated in the text with superscript numbers (or sometimes letters or other symbols). You can insert footnotes automatically in Word or Google Docs. They're used to provide: Citations in certain styles.

Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

Using the Notes drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes pane, choose Footnote Continuation Notice. The current notice appears in the window. (Note that the notice might be originally blank, so you might not see anything in the window.) Change the notice as desired.

Footnotes, endnotes, and Bibliography entries are single-spaced with an extra line between each. Use the TAB key to indent ½ inch for the first line of every new paragraph. The page number appears in a header ½ inch from the top of the paper and 1 inch from the right edge of the paper.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.

In the Paragraph panel, right-click on the style name and choose Edit ?styleName?. 2. Click on Indents and Spacing, and set Left Indent to the leading value of the footnote (e.g. 9pt).
