To compete in F1, it is necessary to obtain the so-called FIA Super License, the highest racing license appointed by the FIA. It is a driving license that, through certain requirements, shows that you are capable of driving an F1 car and not representing a risk to others.

Drivers must complete 184 miles (300 kilometers) of racing in a recent Formula 1 vehicle. You can complete this driving requirement during official pre-season, in-season, and post-season tests, but the entire portion must be completed within 48 hours.

There are different levels of licences issued by the FIA, which entitle drivers to race in various FIA-sanctioned categories, but the stringent requirements for F1 are, unsurprisingly, the highest level ? the 'Super Licence'.

Herta, a seven-time IndyCar winner and nine-time pole sitter over four full seasons at just 22, had just 32 super license points earned in IndyCar.

Formula One's governing body confirmed Friday that IndyCar driver Colton Herta doesn't have enough points to receive an FIA Super License. The American driver, who has 32 of the required 40 points, needs this license in order to compete on the F1 grid.
