Title jumping is when someone purchases a car and then resells it without having titled it in their own name. Also known as floating a title, the practice is illegal. A title is a record of the vehicle's ownership history kept by the state.

Anytime there's a change to a vehicle or vessel's registered owner or lienholder, that change needs to be updated in DMV's records within 10 days and the California Certificate of Title needs to be transferred to the new owner.

Correction of Name?The following must be submitted: The California Certificate of Title or an Application for Duplicate or Transfer of Title (REG 227) form. The Name Statement portion of the Statement of Facts (REG 256) form. Duplicate title and/or renewal fees, if applicable. No fee is due solely for a name correction.

Contact your DMV in writing and let them know there's an error on the title. Have the DMV issue you a duplicate title. If the previous owner is responsible for the title error, contact them and have them fill in the new vehicle title correctly. For errors that are your fault, make adjustments on your replacement title.

This can be done by contacting your state's DMV. If you live in a title-holding state, the lien holder (the lender that financed your loan) will hold the title and it will only be released when the lien has been fully satisfied.

A Statement of Error or Erasure (REG 101) form is required for any erasure and/or lined out information on the California Certificate of Title. For example, if an individual's signature appears on the title in error and is lined out, a REG 101 must be completed by that individual explaining the error.

If the buyer doesn't transfer the title within 10 days, the car's registration is suspended.

If you don't have the California Certificate of Title, you need to use an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) to transfer ownership. The lienholder's release, if any, must be notarized. The buyer should then bring the completed form to a DMV office and we will issue a new registration and title.

A lien expires 10 years from the date of recording or filing, unless we extend it. If we extend the lien, we will send a new Notice of State Tax Lien and record or file it with the county recorder or California Secretary of State.
