Be prepared to talk about it. Having a gap on your resume won't necessarily prevent you from moving successfully through the interview process. Be honest. You want to be truthful without going into unnecessary detail. Fill the gap. Keep it brief and exit if you need to.

Because this layout places the primary focus on your relevant skills, functional resumes allow you to better tailor the content to a specific role you're hoping to land, without having to worry too much about job titles that don't sound relevant, gaps in employment, or an eclectic work history.

They hate it because they need to draw their own conclusions. The functional resume format was created to cover up gaps in an applicant's experience and recruiters know it. They will skip straight down to the work history to try and figure what you're hiding. It's a dead giveaway.

A major problem with functional resumes is their immediately recognizable format. Functional resumes are different in layout than traditional chronological resumes and as such, it takes just a glance from a hiring professional to notice that you did not supply your information in the standard format.

Don't worry if you have a gap on your resumeit's all about how you explain your experience. A gap on your resume shouldn't stop you from applying for a new job. Resume gap. Even the phrase is scary, calling to mind yawning chasms void of all light and soundand any hope for a new job.

White fonting is not only questionable from an ethical standpoint, but almost never works. Some ATS systems can't read white font. Others are so sophisticated that they pull resumes that have hidden text and eliminate those candidates.

A common trick is to include a keyword several times in a row, but change the text color to white so it is hidden. However, when keywords are highlighted on the hiring manager's end, the white text will stick out like a sore thumb (see screenshot below).
