NOTE: A Junior Driver's License shall automatically become a Regular Driver's License when you turn 18 years old. If you would like a driver's license that no longer has the ?jr? you can apply for a duplicate after you turn 18.

No driving between the hours of 11PM and 5AM is allowed unless a parent, guardian, or spouse over 17 years of age accompanies you in the vehicle. You may drive alone from 11PM to 5AM if you're involved with a public service, volunteer fire company, or employed during those hours.

Nighttime driving restriction begins at 11 p.m.: Even with a junior license, a young driver may not be behind the wheel between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Exceptions for employment and volunteer or charitable service will apply, but young drivers must carry proper documentation regarding their need to travel.

Junior License Passenger limitation: Young drivers can have only one non-family member under 18 with them in the vehicle. After six months on the junior license, the restriction rises to no more than three passengers under 18. Immediate family members are excluded from the restriction.

At age 16, the driver may apply for an intermediate license. The intermediate license allows the driver to drive alone except during a late night curfew (1 a.m. to 5 a.m.). The driver and passengers must use seat belts, be free of alcohol and drugs, and obey the traffic laws.

There, junior drivers need not have supervision when driving between 5am and 9pm. Only one passenger can be under the age of 21, unless the passengers are in the driver's immediate family. If there is a parent or guardian present in the car as a supervising driver, the restriction on under-age passengers is eased.

Texas requires adults ages 18-24 to complete a 6 hour theory course as well as a Road Test. Adults over the age of 25 must pass a written test and the Road Test. By combining the theory requirement with in-car driver training, you'll be better prepared for the Road Test.

You may not drive out of state with a learner's permit. Doing so will result in fines, suspensions, or impounding of the vehicle. A learner's permit is valid for one year (it may be renewed upon request).
