Captions for tables are placed above the table (typically left aligned), and captions for figures are placed below the figure. NOTE: Titles for figures and graphs can be used for oral presentations and posters.

Choose the right type of figure, such as graphs, charts, or images, to convey your message effectively. Create or obtain the figure, properly citing the source if needed. Number and caption each figure, providing concise and informative descriptions. Place figures logically in the paper and reference them in the text.

There are two options for the placement of figures in a paper. The first option is to place all figures on separate pages after the reference list. The second option is to embed each figure within the text.

The caption for a graph will have different information than that for a map; however, the caption's job is to explain to the reader what is illustrated; we do not use the word ?title? synonymously with ?caption?. Tables: The caption goes above the table. Figures: The caption goes below the figure.

Figure captions should appear below the associated figure. Unless formatted as a multi-page table or figure (with a ?Continued? caption ? see below instructions), the entire caption must appear on the same page as the associated table or figure.

The information contained within the caption should include the variable being measured, how the variable is measured if the means of measurement are indirect, the subject of the measurement, and the conditions under which the measurements were taken (see examples)

Figures should be placed after the paragraph where they are first mentioned unless that splits the figure across two pages. Instead of splitting the figure, insert the figure at the beginning of the next page after it is first mentioned.
