Since F1 drivers earn a handsome sum, they have to pay a super licence tax. The money is used by the FIA to improve safety in the sport. Drivers driving at the top teams also tend to earn more than drivers further down the grid. So the more points you have scored during the season, the more you have to pay.

Requirements A minimum age of 18 at the start of their first F1 competition. An existing holder of an International Grade A competition licence. A holder of a valid driving licence. Passing of an FIA theory test on knowledge of the F1 sporting codes and regulations when applying for the first time.

They are handed to drivers if they do something that the FIA perceives as dangerous, such as causing a collision or ignoring yellow flags. The penalty points remain on their licence for a year before expiring. However, if a driver gets 12 points in that year, they'll earn themselves a race ban.

Getting one is extremely difficult because you'll need to be at least 18 years old and have accumulated at least 40 Super Licence points (more on that below) in your last 3 years of racing. You'll also have to pass a theory test by the FIA, but that's the easiest part.

F1 drivers have to pay a certain amount for their F1 licence, with their success only adding to the grand total that has to be dished. The base cost of an F1 Super Licence is ?10,400 per year, which is the sum being paid by three drivers this year ? Nico Hulkenberg, Oscar Piastri and Logan Sargeant.

Winning the championship Super Formula only offers 25 points, with the second- and third-placed drivers getting 20 and 15 points respectively, while F2 awards 40 points for the top three finishers.

How do drivers get a Super Licence? Firstly, drivers must be the holder of a current FIA International Grade A licence, be the holder of a valid driving licence and be at least 18 years old at the start of their first F1 competition.
