The truth is that, yes, it's possible to get scammed by replying to a text message. Fraudsters send billions of text messages every month hoping that a small percentage of people will respond. And their scams are getting harder and harder to spot.

If you are receiving texts that you didn't ask for, report the sender by forwarding the texts to 7726 (or "SPAM").

Why am I getting spam text messages? There are many ways spammers get hold of your cell phone number so they can send SMS spam and sales texts: They may use technology to generate numbers automatically ? so even if you have a brand-new number, you can still receive both robocalls and robotexts.

Legitimate SMS marketing messages are usually sent from a 6-digit short code (like 711711), a 10-digit toll-free phone number (ex: 844-462-2554), or a local text-enabled business phone. If you receive a text message from an unidentified 11-digit number, the odds are high that it's a scam.

Copy the message and forward it to 7726 (SPAM). This helps your wireless provider spot and block similar messages in the future. Report it on the messaging app you use. Look for the option to report junk or spam.

Directly replying to a spam text message lets a spammer know that your number is genuine. After you reply, they can sell your phone number to other spammers who might bombard you with false promises of free gifts and product offers. Instead, it's best to block and report the number.
