Considered modern-day slavery or indentured servitude, migrants to countries such as Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia lack basic rights and are forced to live and work in dangerous conditions.

Compared to enslaved people, these servants got more freedom. They were allowed basic facilities like transportation, shelter, food, and clothing. Some masters even provided free medical care. Since 1917, indentured labor has been deemed illegal.

Indentured servants were men and women who willingly signed a contract in which they agreed to work for a certain number of years to compensate for their voyage to America. Three different types of indentured servant agreements existed in the 18th century: free-willers, King's passengers, and redemptioners.

Duties. Some indentured servants served as cooks, gardeners, housekeepers, field workers, or general laborers while others learned specific trades such as blacksmithing, plastering, and bricklaying, which they often parlayed into future careers.

Indentured persons were numerically important mostly in the region from Virginia north to New Jersey. Other colonies saw far fewer of them. The total number of European immigrants to all 13 colonies before 1775 was 500,000?550,000; of these, 55,000 were involuntary prisoners.

In response, many indentured laborers were forcibly enslaved. These practices violated basic human rights and threatened humanity: indentured servitude became illegal across the United States in 1917. The 13th United States Constitutional amendment was passed after the Civil War.

Indentured servitude reappeared in the Americas in the mid-nineteenth century as a means of transporting Asians to the Caribbean sugar islands and South America following the abolition of slavery. Servitude then remained in legal use until its abolition in 1917.

By 1675 slavery was well established, and by 1700 slaves had almost entirely replaced indentured servants. With plentiful land and slave labor available to grow a lucrative crop, southern planters prospered, and family-based tobacco plantations became the economic and social norm.

In 1799 New York State passed the Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery. Existing slaves became indentured servants. That status was finally ended in 1827 and all the indentured obtained full freedom. A number of acts passed by both the American and the British governments fostered the decline of indentures.
