If you must include the footnote in the middle of a sentence for the sake of clarity, or because the sentence has more than one footnote (try to avoid this!), try to put it at the end of the most relevant phrase, after a comma or other punctuation mark. Otherwise, put it right at the end of the most relevant word.

The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the author's name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).

The footnote is found at the bottom of the page, and is referenced through a superscript number within the main body of your copy. The bibliography page is the last section of your essay or dissertation and includes the full citation information for any source cited or referenced through the course of your work.

Footnote or endnote numbers in the text should follow punctuation, and preferably be placed at the end of a sentence. When citing the source for a quotation, the number should be placed at the end of the quotation and not after the author's name if that appears first in the text.
