Certain fields available for user-defined reports, views, and queries do more than select a specific piece of data. These fields, called smart fields, combine multiple pieces of data or decide which data to display based on what is available.

Removing Fields from Original Documents Open the Word document. Press CTRL+A on your keyboard to select all the text within the document. Right-click, then click Toggle Field Codes. Press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 on your keyboard. This will remove the field codes, replacing them with the text they contained. Save the document.

They've been set up in their Properties dialogs with default text and with the "Fill-in enabled" box unchecked. Finally, the Form Field Shading button in the Developer ribbon has been turned on, which is why the grey shading appears. You can remove the shading simply by clicking that button to turn it off.

Deleted custom fields and their data are stored until your org permanently deletes them or 15 days has elapsed, whichever happens first. Until that time, you can restore the field and its data. For information on restoring deleted custom fields and relationships, see Manage Deleted Custom Fields.

In Word, go to the "Tools" menu, and select "Options". Here, on the "View" tab, uncheck the box named "Field Codes". Click "OK". The document should now appear normal.
