Description. systemd-journald is a system service that collects and stores logging data. It creates and maintains structured, indexed journals based on logging information that is received from a variety of sources: Kernel log messages, via kmsg. Simple system log messages, via the libc syslog(3) call.

These files configure various parameters of the systemd journal service, systemd-journald.Instances managing other namespaces read /etc/systemd/journald@NAMESPACE.conf and associated drop-ins with the namespace identifier filled in. This allows each namespace to carry a distinct configuration. See systemd-journald.

The logs are still kept in a text file under /var/log unless you have activated the use of persistent journald log by creating /var/log/journal directory.

The systemd-journald instance managing the default namespace is configured by /etc/systemd/journald. conf and associated drop-ins.

The default journald configuration for Debian unstable is Storage=auto without /var/log/journal , thus journal-format logs are written to /run/log/journal . That's fine. What's not fine is that, under these conditions, the logs are never rotated, so eventually /run will be completely full of log files.

Journald was originally designed for local logs on desktops where there are not that many logs. On the other hand, syslog-ng was designed for high-performance central log collection from the ground up. syslog-ng can collect logs from many more sources, including pipes, sockets, and files.
