All graphs, diagrams and images should be titled as Figures. These will be numbered consecutively throughout the dissertation: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and so on. After the numbering, there should be a short and concise title. Titles for figures appear below the figure itself.

Table captions should appear above the associated table. Figure captions should appear below the associated figure. Unless formatted as a multi-page table or figure (with a ?Continued? caption ? see below instructions), the entire caption must appear on the same page as the associated table or figure.

Figure captions Figures are typically read from the bottom up, so captions go below the figure and are left-justified.

Number all tables and figures (even when there is only one table or a figure). Phrase them as complete and declarative sentences that capture their essence if you are using them in reports and presentations and as sentence fragments that indicate their scope if they are part of a research paper.

To properly label a graph, you should identify which variable the x-axis and y-axis each represent. Don't forget to include units of measure (called scale) so readers can understand each quantity represented by those axes. Finally, add a title to the graph, usually in the form "y-axis variable vs. x-axis variable."

Keep the following in mind when including a figure in your paper: The figure number, in bold text, belongs above the figure. The figure title belongs one double-spaced line below the figure number. The title should be in title case and italics.

Pie charts can be labeled in terms of absolute values or by proportions. Labeling slices with absolute amounts and implying the proportions with the slice sizes is conventional, but consider the goals of your visualization carefully in order to decide on the best annotation style to use for your plot.
