Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation.

Captions for tables are placed above the table (typically left aligned), and captions for figures are placed below the figure. NOTE: Titles for figures and graphs can be used for oral presentations and posters.

Figures should be labeled with a number followed by a descriptive caption or title. Captions should be concise but comprehensive. They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data.

Give each table a brief but descriptive title, and capitalize the table title in italic title case. headings: Tables may include a variety of headings depending on the nature and arrangement of the data. All tables should include column headings, including a stub heading (heading for the leftmost, or stub, column).

Tables, figures, illustrations, and other such items should be identified with the word "Table", "Figure", or other appropriate descriptor, and include a title and/or caption. The title or caption must be included in the List of Tables, List of Figures, or other list.

An informative caption should provide a brief description of the variables, categories, or groups involved, as well as the sample size, population, method, or formula used. Additionally, it should summarize the main result, relationship, or comparison shown by the data.

Table captions should appear above the associated table. Figure captions should appear below the associated figure. Unless formatted as a multi-page table or figure (with a ?Continued? caption ? see below instructions), the entire caption must appear on the same page as the associated table or figure.

Labelling Tables and Figures Figure captions are generally placed below the figures, while table captions must be placed above the tables. This is because we generally read tables from the top down, and therefore want to see the caption at the top. Figures are not always read top down.
