Special text characters are normal characters that don't appear on standard keyboards; but once inserted, they look the same as keyboard characters. Word has twelve special text characters.

Go to Insert > Symbol. Pick a symbol, or choose More Symbols. Scroll up or down to find the symbol you want to insert. Different font sets often have different symbols in them and the most commonly used symbols are in the Segoe UI Symbol font set.

From the Insert tab, click Symbol. Choose the symbol that you want from the drop-down list. If the symbol is not in the list, click More Symbols. In the font box, choose the font you are using, click the symbol you want to insert, and select Insert.
