Email the recommender explaining that you are hoping they might be willing to write you a letter, and inquiring whether they can write you a strong letter of support. Ask if they would be willing to meet you to discuss it further.

To upload in the application, they can be scanned with a digital signature. However, you will eventually have to submit printed, signed in ink, letters. So, if possible, try to obtain them the original copies with ink signatures so you wouldn't have to ask again.

The employer with either be familiar with electronic signatures or not. If they are then it is likely they will accept the letter without question, if they are not then they will probably be intrigued and it may be a good conversation starter in the interview.
