Footnoting should be numerical and chronological: the first reference is 1, the second is 2, and so on. The advantage of footnoting is that the reader can simply cast their eyes down the page to discover the source of a reference which interests them.

Click View footnote area or View endnote area, and then click OK. In the note pane, click Footnote Continuation Notice or Endnote Continuation Notice. In the note pane, type the text you want to use for the continuation notice ? for example, type Endnotes continued on the next page.

Hyperlinks in footnotes should work just the same as they do in the body text. Hyperlinks in headers & footers, though, aren't clickable when viewing the document body.

Footnotes and Cross References Place your cursor at the point in the footnote where you want the note number to appear. Go to "References," then click "Cross-reference." Change the ?Reference type" dropdown to "Footnote" and leave the ?Insert as hyperlink? box checked.

Use hyperlinks to define or explain terms, for cross references in a document, and for links to external documents. Use them in preference to footnotes, including for references and citations.

MLA (9th ed.): Your Choice You can link or not, but be consistent with yourself (that is, don't have some links clickable and some not). If your paper will be read digitally, you can let Word hyperlink them. If you don't want/need to hyperlink, omit the http:// or https:// from the beginning of the URL.

If you don't include a bibliography, you must give a full citation for the first footnote from each work and abbreviated footnotes for subsequent citations. A complete footnote has the same information as the citation in the bibliography, with some differences in format, plus the page number of a particular quotation.
