A Site Column is a template of a configured column. By creating a Site Column, you can reuse it anywhere else in the site and not have to manually rebuild its configuration at each reuse. When creating a new column in a list or library, you have a choice to either "Create column" or "Add from existing site columns".

At the top of the form, select Edit form > Edit columns. In the Edit columns pane, check (to show) or uncheck (to hide) the checkbox for the column or columns as needed.

Essentially a site column is a reusable column definition or template that you can add to multiple lists across multiple SharePoint sites. These can be particularly useful if you are looking to ensure that your business has consistent settings across lists and libraries.

A column's type determines how data is stored and displayed in a list or library. When you create a column for a list or library, you choose a column type that indicates the type of data that you want to store in the column, such as numbers only, formatted text, or a number that is calculated automatically.

So which one should you choose? If you're sure that the column will only need to be used/created in a particular list or library, then a list column is easy and quick. If you're looking for reusability across list/library boundaries, then create a site column.

Create a site column with SharePoint Server 2016, 2013, or 2010. On the Site Settings page, under Web Designer Galleries, select Site columns. On the Site Columns page, select Create. In the Name and Type section, enter the name that you want in the Column name box.

List columns are more flexible than normal, atomic vector columns. Lists can contain anything, so a list column can be made up of atomic vectors, other lists, tibbles, etc. As you'll see, this can be a useful way to store data.
