Some say it will be the euro; others, perhaps the Japanese yen or China's renminbi. And some call for a new world reserve currency, possibly based on the IMF's Special Drawing Right or SDR, a reserve asset.

The latest country to join the euro area (also referred to as 'eurozone') was Croatia, which introduced the common currency on 1 January 2023. The euro was introduced as an accounting currency in 11 member states on 1 January 1999.

Denmark uses the krone as its currency and does not use the euro, having negotiated the right to opt out from participation under the Maastricht Treaty of 1992. In 2000, the government held a referendum on introducing the euro, which was defeated with 53.2% voting no and 46.8% voting yes.

As of today, all euro notes and coins are legal tender in all euro area countries.
