"Enter Sandman" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is the opening track and lead single from their self-titled fifth album, released in 1991. The music was written by Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

It was certified 3× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping three million copies in the United States. Garage Inc.

Since then, all their studio albums beginning with 1991's self-titled LP (aka ?The Black Album?) had premiered at the top spot, until now. Metallica can take solace in the fact that 72 Seasons is No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, with 134,000 of its 146,000 equivalent units coming in the form of pure album sales.

The first, Load, came out June 4, 1996. Then in July 1997, Metallica returned to the studio to continue working on the 13 songs they didn't finish the first time. On Nov. 18, 1997, they released the finished batch as Reload.

Metallica has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide, with over 67 million records in the United States alone (56.3 million albums since 1991 when SoundScan started tracking actual sales figures).

Ride the Lightning sold more than six million copies and featured songs ranging from four to nine minutes long. The album peaked at No. 100 on Billboard's Top 200 list and features tracks such as ?For Whom the Bell Tolls,? ?Creeping Death,? and their first power ballad, ?Fade to Black.?
