§5104. Assignment of load lines. (a) The Secretary shall assign load lines for a vessel so that they indicate the minimum safe freeboard to which the vessel may be loaded. However, if the owner requests, the Secretary may assign load lines that result in greater freeboard than the minimum safe freeboard.

All assigned load lines must be marked amidships on each side of the ship, together with the deck line. Ships intended for the carriage of timber deck cargo are assigned a smaller freeboard as the deck cargo provides protection against the impact of waves. The Convention includes three annexes.

The load line length is measured on waterline "d1" at 85 percent (0.85D) of the least molded depth "D." The load line length is either: 96 percent of the total waterline length, or. the waterline length from the FP (forward side of the stem) to the axis of the rudder stock, whichever is longer.

§ 42.13-25 Load line mark. (a) The load line mark shall consist of a ring 12 inches in outside diameter and 1 inch wide which is intersected by a horizontal line 18 inches in length and 1 inch in breadth, the upper edge of which passes through the center of the ring.
