Upon successful completion of the load line survey, a Load Line Certificate is issued to the ship, confirming its compliance with the load line regulations. The Load Line Certificate specifies the ship's load line zones, marks, and other relevant information.

Loadline convention basically limits the ships on the minimum freeboard it needs to maintain. The minimum freeboard required by the loadline convention is calculated by taking into account many factors including reserve buoyancy of the ship. Loadline convention applies to ships of more than 24 meters in length.

Load line certificates (domestic or ICLL) are issued on behalf of the United States by the American Bureau of Shipping or one of several other USCG-approved classification societies. The choice of assigning authority is made by the vessel owner/operator.

How is it maintained? By a periodical survey not exceed five years, to ensure that the structure, equipment, arrangements, materials and scantlings fully comply with the requirements of the Convention.

A) The duration of an International Load Line Exemption Certificate issued by an Administration to a ship exempted under paragraph (2) of Article 6 shall not exceed five years from the date of issue.

(1) If the load line marks are found to be correct for the condition the vessel is then in, the assigning and issuing authority shall issue a new load line certificate, valid for such time as the condition of the vessel then warrants but in no case for a period of longer than 5 years.

The load line length is measured on waterline "d1" at 85 percent (0.85D) of the least molded depth "D." The load line length is either: 96 percent of the total waterline length, or. the waterline length from the FP (forward side of the stem) to the axis of the rudder stock, whichever is longer.
