The FCC regulates the frequencies used on two-way radios. Having an FCC license gives you your own frequencies to operate on. Not licensing your radio runs you the risk of interfering with other channels, which could leave you without communication and potentially being reported to the FCC and possibly fined.

Anyone can get two or more commercial two way radios of a certain type, but the FCC requires two way radio users to have two-way radio licenses if the types of two way radios they intend to use are over a certain wattage, and if their use is intended for professional, commercial, or other use determined by the FCC.

The power output (watts) of the radio will determine if you need an FCC license. Two-way radios that are below 2 watts can be used license free. License free, low powered radios are used for short range communication typically 0.5 to a few miles. Any radio above 2 watts will require an FCC license to operate.

It is simply a requirement to operate an aircraft internationally. The good thing about this permit is that you only pay the fee once and it never expires. If you are flying within the continental US you will not need this, your pilot certificate will suffice.

The most popular types of personal radio services are Citizens Band Radio Service, Family Radio Service, General Mobile Radio Service, Low-Power Radio Service and Multi-Use Radio Service. Of these types of services, only General Mobile Radio Service requires an FCC license to operate.

FCC rules require that licensees of ship and aircraft stations permit only persons holding the appropriate FCC-issued commercial operator license to perform specified transmitter operation, maintenance and repair duties.

How to Obtain a License. Submit FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates to apply. Use the FCC Form 605 and the FCC Form 159 (fee processing form) to renew your license or to replace a lost, stolen, or mutilated license.
