Use the LOCK TABLE statement to lock one or more tables, table partitions, or table subpartitions in a specified mode. This lock manually overrides automatic locking and permits or denies access to a table or view by other users for the duration of your operation.

The LOCK TABLE statement allows you to explicitly acquire a shared or exclusive table lock on the specified table. The table lock lasts until the end of the current transaction. To lock a table, you must either be the database owner or the table owner.

All tables that are locked by the current thread are automatically unlocked when the thread issues another LOCK TABLES, or when the connection to the server is closed. The main reasons to use LOCK TABLES are for emulating transactions or getting more speed when updating tables.

A locked table remains locked until you either commit your transaction or roll it back, either entirely or to a savepoint before you locked the table. A lock never prevents other users from querying the table. A query never places a lock on a table.

The LOCK TABLE statement prevents concurrent application processes from using or changing a table. The lock is released when the unit of work issuing the LOCK TABLE statement either commits or terminates.

You can lock a table if you own the table or if you have the Select privilege on the table, either from a direct grant to your user ID or from a grant to PUBLIC. You can only unlock a table that you locked. You cannot unlock a table that another process locked. Only one lock can apply to a table at a time.
