Make - a tool that automatically determines which source files of a program need to be recompiled and/or linked. Make gets its knowledge of how to build your program from a file called the makefile (or Makefile).

The make command compiles different program pieces and builds a final executable. The purpose of make is to automate file compilation, making the process simpler and less time-consuming. The command works with any programming language as long as the compiler can be executed with a shell command.

As a makefile is a list of shell commands, it must be written for the shell which will process the makefile. A makefile that works well in one shell may not execute properly in another shell. The makefile contains a list of rules. These rules tell the system what commands you want to be executed.

The make command assists in maintaining a set of programs, usually pertaining to a particular software project, by building up-to-date versions of programs. The make command is most useful for medium-sized programming projects.

Finally, you can also debug the Makefile by running Make with the debug flag: make -d . This will print all the rules (including built-in ones) that Make tries for each of the targets, and whether or not a rule needs to be run.
