Introduced on July 1, 1963, the basic format consisted of five digits. In 1983, an extended ZIP+4 code was introduced; it included the five digits of the ZIP Code, followed by a hyphen and four digits that designated a more specific location.

The ZIP code 00001 is one of more than 42,000 five-digit ZIP Codes in the United States. ZIP area 00001 is located in the Dillingham Census Area, state of Alaska.

These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. It could represent a handful of houses on one side of a street, or even a single building that receives a high volume of mail.

Primary state prefixes. ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.

A United States postal code, for example, might be either five digits or five digits followed a hyphen (dash) and another four digits (12345-1234). The first number in the code represents a general geographic area of the nation, ?0? in the East, moving to ?9? in the West. The next two numbers represent regional areas, and the final two identify specific Post Offices.

11111 is not a valid 5 digit ZIP Code, but there are valid ZIP Codes that start with 111: 11101, 11102, etc. Once position 28 was changed to Y, then MSP considered 11111 as an Invalid zip, because it looked at all 5 digits.
