Name resolution is a process of converting an IP address to a user friendly computer name. Originally networks used host files to resolve names to IP addresses.

Name resolution is the process of associating names and IP addresses, and it's one of the most essential services on a network. People understand descriptive names, but network communications require difficult-to-remember addresses.

In order to be used by protocols such as TCP and IP, host names are converted into IP addresses using a process known as name resolution. There are different forms of name resolution in the Internet, but the most prevalent and important one uses a distributed database system known as the Domain Name System (DNS).

To resolve a name in a domain network, the resolver routine first queries the domain name server database, which may be local if the host is a domain name server or may be on a foreign host. Name servers translate domain names into Internet addresses.

Name-to-address resolution, also referred to as mapping, is the process of finding the IP address of a computer in a database by using its host name as an index. Name-to-address mapping occurs when a program running on your local machine needs to contact a remote computer.

Right-click the Server List, then select New Server. Type the name or IP address of your DNS server in the box. Use the IP address, rather than the server name, if you are administering the DNS server from another computer. DNS will add the server to the list.

Domain resolution is the process of converting domain names to IP addresses. The resolution of the domain name is done by the DNS server. Domain resolution is also called domain pointing, server settings, domain configuration, reverse IP registration, and so on.
